Celebrating GDA, Persistent Organic Pollutants. A vision for a better clean Environment:

For many years, Egypt has been effective in exerting great efforts in managing different kinds of pollution. In this context, Egypt has signed the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants and ratified the treaty in 2003.

Therefore, Dreamers of Tomorrow  has launched a one day seminar under the title “Celebration of GDA, Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants: a vision to a better Egyptian clean environment”. The objective of the project is to Celebrate GDA & develop and formulate a milestone for a national awareness campaign about the danger of the persistent organic pollutants and thereby strengthen national capacity and enhance knowledge and understanding amongst decision makers, managers, the industry, agriculture and the public at large on POPs.

On one hand the seminar addressed the sources of these pollutants and its negative effect on health and environment, in addition to its economic, social and cultural effect on the Egyptian society. On the other hand, the seminar addressed the progress achieved in implementing Stockholm Convention in Egypt and the future steps as well. It worth mentioning that the Egyptian Ministry of Environmental Affairs launched a project to implement a plan dealing with this kind of pollutants under the name “National Implementation Plan Project of POPs Convention”.

Efham:

 - Period: year and half, April-October 2007

- Partners: 1) Egyptian Education Foundation for Employment

                 2) Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

Youth and Entrepreneurship Civic Education Program With unemployment soaring and education not matching the skill demands of modern companies, recent graduates from universities in the Arab world have few employment prospects. The NED-funding Efham project has fostered the growth of the entrepreneurial spirit among youth by promoting the values of free market economy, equal access to economic opportunities and democracy. Efham, meaning “understanding” in Arabic, encourages students to create their own entrepreneurial opportunities when employment options seem limited. The entrepreneurial program introduces the values of risk taking, creative and critical thinking, and civic responsibility to students coming from a socialist and state-run educational system that does not promote these values. CIPE has empowered Arab youth through the Efham Youth and Entrepreneurship Civic Education Program since 2002. Over two hundred university students participated in the first Efham skill building session. The Cairo University Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences developed the curriculum in collaboration with the Efham Advisory Team. Following the first training program, the Efham curriculum was introduced into Egyptian universities. Efham is dynamically steered by revolving committees of Arab youth and young professionals, bringing the market economy opportunities to youth throughout the Arab world. Visit the Efham site at

Capacity Building for Egyptian Parliament Staff:

Partners: Westminister foundation for Democracy ( link to WFD)

The project aims at Enhancing parliamentary capacity and improving legislative process via training staffers from Egyptian parliament, local councils, political parties and other concerned entities. Those  staffers would support parliamentarians in addressing issues of governance.

The creation of such model would allow Parliamentarians to be actively involved in Reform efforts and engage in Policy dialogue in their respective countries and promote issues related to good governance. This becomes a critical initiative in light of the recent constitutional developments that gave el Shura Council, legislative authority.

The project will include training staffers on legal issues, administrative issues and other things related to both Academic and administrative work such as data collection, report writing, how to manage elections and how to deal with constituency requirements. Moreover, since those staffers will be chosen mainly from the parliamentary staffers, the project is envisioned to promote youth involvement in the political process by practicing in parliamentarians' offices and by delving into the decision making process inside parliament in such a young age.
